just a short time ago. thank you for joining us. i'm jacqueline london. >> and i'm jim rosenfield. let's get straight to nbc10's brandon hudson live at the scene near frankford avenue. tonight that child is safe, brandon? >> reporter: yes, jim and jacqueline. that child is safe with his mom tonight, but moments earlier, it was a scary situation for that 6-year-old. police say the little boy was sitting in his mom's car at this wells fargo bank across the street. the thief jumped in the car but only made it a short distance, then ditched the car over this alley way where you see the two lights. that's when a stranger jumped in to help. that kind person reunited the son with his mother. the stranger followed the stolen car and helped the child after the car was left behind. our nbc crew found philadelphia police at the intersection of frankford avenue in mayfair. this happened at around 9:00 tonight. police say the mom was out of the car for just a few moments to use the atm. that's when the suspect stole her car while her 6-year-old was

inside. the thief drove about a block before letting the kid out and then leaving the car altogether. we caught up with the person who brought the boy back to his mom. >> he was driving. i knew he was going to wreck. so i figured i'd get him in five blocks. when i hit the car in gear and i went down charles, he already probably looked in the rear view, saw a kid, and ripped it over to the side and jumped out. then i was right there and got the kid and ran him to his mom, and he went into the shadows. >> reporter: okay. so again you're getting video of this reunion between the mom and son, thankful that that stranger stepped in to help this family out. now, police are still looking for this suspect. he was on foot and somewhere in these north philadelphia neighborhoods. surveillance video shows that he was wearing a gray hoodie, black pants, and white sneakers. reporting live hear in mayfair, i'm brandon hudson, nbc10 news.

a rising political star's fall from grace. once pennsylvania's top law enforcement officer, kathleen kane will now have to serve time behind bars. nbc10 was there as the former attorney general was released on bail earlier this evening. today, kane was ordered to serve 10 to 23 months in county jail. >> this despite a push from her friends and family to show her mercy. nbc10's denise nakano has been following the story. >> reporter: jim and jacqueline, kathleen kane is out on bail tonight. she left the courtroom straight for jail, and within a few hours, she was set free. a smiling kathleen kane walked out of the montgomery county jail after posting $75,000 cash bail, getting processed, and finger printed. she's free for now, having been sentenced to 10 to 23 months in jail. onlookers watched as her family picked her up from the correctional facility in

eagleville. >> i was kind of shocked to see it all going down. that's what happens. she's not above the law just like anybody else isn't. >> reporter: earlier today, she drove herself to court and then taken away in handcuffs. kane's twin sister. >> we love her. that's all. >> reporter: it's a fall from grace for the former attorney general convicted of leaking details of a grand jury investigation and lying about it under oath. >> she put her own desire for personal revenge above everything else, above the citizens of this state, above the hard-working prosecutors and the staff at the attorney general's office. >> reporter: kane asked for mercy, and about 25 character witnesses spoke on her behalf. the youngest being her 15-year-old son. kane said she feared what would happen to her teen boys if she went to jail. a judge cited her overly inflated ego as the reason kane broke the law and used her office to get even with her rivals, current and former a.g. staffers testified that working

under kane brought a culture of fear and retaliation. now, kane is free on bail until after her appeal is heard. her sentence also includes eight years' probation after jail time. reporting live from norristown, denise nakano, nbc10 news. pennsylvania's current top prosecutor, bruce beamer called today a sad day for the commonwealth. governor tom wolf appointed him attorney general over the summer following kane's conviction. in just over two weaks, voters will head to the poll to choose a permanent replacement for kathleen kane. turning now to our weather, we're tracking a cool down as we take a live look at center city. you can see it's breezy out there tonight and it's only going to get colder as we get into the middle of our work week. >> let's get a check of our first alert neighborhood forecast. sheena. >> tomorrow is going to be colder than today, especially by the afternoon. you'll notice colder and windy.

right now temperatures are mostly around 50 degrees for the area. 48 in wilmington. 53 degrees right now in philadelphia. 52 mount holly. but take a look at the cool air just to our north. now that warmer air we saw today is going to remain to the south, but that cooler air is moving in now, and it's still kind of windy outside. as we go through the overnight hours, mostly clear skies. look at tomorrow morning, 8:30. if you're in exton or at the bus top around that time, you could be in the upper 30s by then. breezy and chilly to start your day. by the afternoon, this is where we should be topping out. it's going to be windy. temperatures mostly in the mid-to-low 50s. i'll show you who request expect the widespread frost as we go through this week, and our next chance of rain coming up. now to decision 2016. with the debates now behind the presidential candidates, both donald trump and hillary clinton were out on the campaign trail today. the republican nominee continued

his three-day swing through the sunshine state. >> i will your voice, and i will fight harder than anybody has ever fought for you before. and i will win because i know how to win. >> trump wrapped up his rally in tampa just hours ago. it was his second stop as early voting got under way in florida. trump told the crowd that he believes he can win and not to list ton what he called phony polls. he also continued to accuse clinton of helping rig the election. meanwhile, some big names were out showing their support for hillary clinton today. vice president joe biden went on the attack against trump while speaking in the battleground state of ohio tonight. he told supporters in dayton that trump's actions and comments should disqualify him from being president. it comes as clinton joined forces with the popular democratic senator in new hampshire. >> this donald, nasty women are tough.

nasty women are smart. and nasty women vote. >> elizabeth warren went after trump for calling the democratic nominee a nasty woman during last week's final debate. clinton went on to say that the massachusetts senator exposes trump's poor temperaturement and lack of qualifications. pennsylvania's race for u.s. senate took center stage tonight as republican senator pat toomey and democrat katie mcginty squared off in their final debate before the election. still ahead. new at 11:00, it was all about public safety in rittenhouse square tonight. residents packed inside the choifrp of the holy strinity. officials from the philadelphia police department were joined by local lawmakers and community leaders for a question and answer session. last week a good samaritan was shot trying to break up a robbery between 19th and walnut. a 17-year-old surrendered to police over the weekend. the victim is now in stable condition. commissioner richard roth says safety in and around the park is a top priority.

>> do anything that we possibly can do to work alongside partners because, again, you know, it's about everybody's quality of life. >> police say they have already stepped up police patrols in the area. they're also working to address the homeless situation in the park. an historic center city building is in need of some major repairs after someone made off with the railing from the union league, causing part of that staircase to crumble. you can see right there the steps were just left in pieces. the union league tells us someone ripped the brass railing off and got away with a piece about six feet long. police are reviewing surveillance video to try to identify a suspect. a trenton man is facing human trafficking charges for allegedly kidnapping a teenage girl and forcing her to be a sex slave. bray onturner is accused of holding a 17-year-old mentally disabled girl captive for a week. he was in mercer county court today for a bail hearing. police say the 26-year-old forced the teen to have sex with

several different men. prosecutors say turner threatened to kill the girl when she tried to leave. he's being held on $300,000 cash bond. new tonight, uberx and lyft have been given the green light in philadelphia. the state senate approved a bill to legalize the ride sharing services by a vote of 47-1. if approved, both companies will have to pay a 1.4% tax each ride. the companies have been in a battle with the city since they started giving rides two years ago. governor wolf is expected to sign the bill into law. on the attack. new surveillance videos providing clues about a string of assaults at one local university. this as one of the victims' fathers reacts to that attack that left his daughter battered and bruised. making a final pitch. the candidates in pennsylvania's senate battle face off one last time ahead of the election. why donald trump took center stage. sheena. >> and expect temperatures to start dropping off. tomorrow will be a colder day. then we're talking about

he thinks donald trump has put forward incredibly constructive ideas. senator, in politics, the definition of courage and character is doing what's right even if it costs you votes. and, senator, you have failed that test. >> this is televised statewide, katie. sorry if you didn't know that. >> tonight republican senator pat toomey and democrat katie mcginty squared off for their second and final debate with donald trump taking center stage. mcginty criticized toomey for failing to take a stand on whether he's actually supporting the republican nominee. while the senator tried to paint mcginty has an habitual liar. in in televised debate between toomey and mcginty, they tangled over everything from endorsements to the economy. >> unfortunately, senator toomey, if it's not fossil fuel dirty energy, he's not for it. follow the money. one of the single biggest recipients of big oil money in the united states congress.

>> every pennsylvania worker lost their job. pennsylvania taxpayers lost their money, but it worked out okay for katie. she became a multimillionaire. that's very nice. that's not how you grow an economy. >> on the issue of negative campaign ads flooding the airwaves, rather than backing down, both candidates doubled down. >> there's only one person m this campaign whose ads had to be taken down because they were so flagrantly dishonest. that's katie mcginty's ads. >> what is dishonest is what the senator has just said. there's actually only one candidate on this stage who had to take his ad down. that was senator toomey. my campaign has had to take no ads down. >> and the topic that caused the biggest mixed reaction from the crowd, police relations and black lives matter. mcginty, the daughter of a philadelphia policeman. >> i am happy to say black lives matter because from where i stand, when we recognize the dignity of any person, we're all lifted up. and when any person is denied dignity, we're taken down. >> the problem with the black

lives matter movement and katie mcginty propagating this is just that phrase itself is meant to impugn the integrity of the police by implying that they don't think that black lives do matter. and, in fact, it's my view that all lives matter, and i think police get that. i think police get that [ cheers and applause ] >> in the end, while both candidates remained far apart on many issues, they came close to shake hands as the countdown continues in this bitter battle. an update on a string of assaults at temple university. >> we're getting our first look at surveillance video of the attacks that injured three students, a campus officer, and a police horse. the video right here, the moment the students were attacked near broad and cecil b. moore. you can see the mob on the far side of the street. then all of a sudden, kra os breaks out. two 19-year-old men and a girl were injured. this picture was sent into the

nbc10 newsroom of the female student. you can see her face was clearly bruised there. we spoke to that girl's father earlier today. >> the fact that they unmercifully pinned her down, so many people, and beat her, i just can't even fathom. my heart dropped when i found out. >> several arrests have been made, including a 19-year-old. the investigation remains ongoing. turning to our weather now, hold on to your hats tomorrow. it is going to be a windy one. >> sheena parveen back to let us know how far our temps are going to fall. >> yeah, windy and about 10 degrees colder than it was this afternoon. so temperatures are going to drop through the day tomorrow. cooler than today. yes, it is going to be windy as well. it's going to make it feel a little bit colder because of that wind. another thing we're going to be watching as we go through this week, we have widespread frost by wednesday morning. so late tomorrow night, into wednesday morning, temperatures will get even colder. many areas will be at or below

freezing. the philadelphia area, mid-30s. and once that frost leaves, we have a cold, rainy day setting up up. on thursday, there is the potential we could see a wintry mix closer to the poconos. tomorrow's neighborhood temperatures, if you're in allentown, you'll be waking up to temperatures in the upper 30s, topping out around 53 degrees. winds gusting closer to 25 miles an hour. dover, 58 degrees for a high temperature. but we will be staying dry. now we're looking at wednesday morning. this is going to be the feels like temperature. there's going to be very little wind wednesday morning, but with any breeze, it is going to make temperatures feel below freezing for most of the area except if you're along the immediate shore. and even in dover, feeling around 33 possibly. either way, look at those upper 20s as you go farther north and west of philadelphia. that is the morning. we're expecting widespread

frost. now we're looking at future weather. here we go to tomorrow afternoon. it's going to be cool and windy, but we do stay nice and dry. then we go into wednesday. another cool day after that cold morning i just showed you. dry through the afternoon. notice the clouds increasing, though. and now we're looking at thursday. this is 4:00 in the morning, and now we're starting to see a little bit of snow. maybe a wintry mix. possibly in the poconos, maybe stretching into parts of lehigh, north hampton county. we'll have to watch that very closely. t it's not going to be long lasting. it should be changing over terrain as we go through the day thursday. so for the rest of thursday, it's going to be cold and rainy. high temperatures thursday, 58 degrees. we expect the rain with that, so, yes, you'll want the jacket and umbrella. you'll want to keep the jacket handy friday. 58 degrees. saturday we warm up to the upper 60s. some showers around. cooler sunday. 60 degrees there. we start next week cooler, but it looks like we'll be getting closer to 70 and warm up as we
